Course Description:
This Travel Course will take students to the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores, an autonomous region of Portugal. Azores is known for its exquisite eco-friendly beauty and rich religious and cultural traditions. This is an embedded travel, Spring Semester course, which incorporates an overseas trip during Spring Break. The group will stay at affordable hotels in the capital city (island of São Miguel) and attend language and culture classes at the University of the Azores. While there, students will be fully immersed in the language and culture of the region, by taking walking tours to historic sites, and having focused language and cultural classes. Some of the activities for the course include sharing traditional Azorean food, a visit to the local outdoor market, and a trip to a volcanic site. Students will be able to interact with local Azoreans as they visit these locales. Students are expected to engage in daily conversational classes, either at the University of the Azores or during the “walking language lessons” provided by Dr. Fernanda Ferreira, the Travel Course leader. Professor Ferreira will guide students as they make connections between language and culture in these various locations. Students are also going to be able to connect with the Azorean communities in places such as in New Bedford, where immigrant communities thrive and continue to maintain their cultural values.
