Course Description
This course explores Great Britain's relationship to the American Civil War, from the antebellum period through to the end of the fighting in North America in 1865. This course will explore several broad topics. These include the international slave trade and abolitionist movement, the industrial revolution and global cotton economy, British neutrality and diplomacy with both the Union and the Confederacy, and the principle strains on Anglo-American relations during the immediate post-war period, for example the Alabama claims and the Fenian movement.
